I Stepped in to Help My Dad While He Was in the Hospital

I didn’t realize that I would one day follow in my dad’s footsteps. He had a major heart attack one day, and was in the hospital for a week. My brother and I stepped in to help the main manager of the steel manufacturing company that dad ran. I suddenly had to learn all about vibration switches and all of the other things that came with the job. I also found that I really enjoyed learning everything new that I was learning about. I just wished dad would get better so that he could come back to the plant and work alongside us quickly.

I had just graduated from high school, and I had no idea what I was going to do with my life. I was kicking around the idea of going to community college because my grades were not good enough to get into a big university just yet. My dad had tried to talk to me a number of times about coming to work from him, but he didn’t have a job that sounded very interesting. Oh, dad did really well at it and made a lot of money, but I wanted something filled with adventure and I wanted to work outdoors. Dad gave up on trying to get me to come to the plant with him.

When dad had a heart attack, I was so upset. I was not ready to lose him. And I found myself hoping that he would pull through. He did, and they let him go from the hospital after just one week. But they told him that he needed to take it easy for at least 3 weeks afterward to recuperate. I told him that we had everything under control at the factory. I was learning a lot and I was really enjoying it.
