By default, Firefox displays annoying error messages if a connection fails, instead of quietly displaying the error information in the browser window as Internet Explorer does. To turn off the error messages and use pages instead, add the following code to your user.js file:

size=4>

Instead of annoying error dialog messages, display pages:
user_pref("browser.xul.error_pages.enabled", true);

8. Gmail (Google Mail) Account

Although not generally available yet, there are a few ways you can get an account
before all the good email addresses start getting snatched up. Basically, you need
an invitation from a Gmail tester. Here are a couple of ways to get one.  (I am not
commenting about it. I realize that Gmail will be free when it is released.  I'm simply
providing information to help you get one if you really can't wait until it is released
to the general public and just want to get an account. If you're not in any hurry and
can wait, choose the third link to stay updated about availability.)

Try gmailswap.com
http://www.gmailswap.com/

Buy yourself a Gmail Invitation on Ebay.
Here is the link.  I used the search keyword "gmail" on Ebay. Many are less than $1.

14. Security Settings

Security is actually better with open-source. "If you can find the door, you can lock it." With other browsers the door is inside a closed box. (Applies to O/S's too :) There are now a couple of security spoofs out there for Firefox. Unlike IE there is an easy way to catch them that is not often mentioned. You don't need to install any special program, just use the security settings mentioned in this step. More doors will be locked by default as time goes on.

Simply type in about:config into the address bar.
Then search for and change these settings to TRUE
To change a value double click on it with your left mouse button
Then change the value and click on "OK" with your left mouse button

Recommended:
disable_window_open_feature.location
disable_window_open_feature.status*
disable_window_open_feature.titlebar
disable_window_status_change*

Optional:

disable_window_open_feature.close
disable_window_open_feature.directories
disable_window_open_feature.menubar
disable_window_open_feature.minimizable
disable_window_open_feature.personalbar
disable_window_open_feature.resizable
disable_window_open_feature.scrollbars
disable_window_open_feature.toolbar

* set to "true" by default in the next release of Firefox

15. Firefox Promotional Buttons for your web site

Note from the author of this web page:

I have been an explorer user for a long time.
The question is not whether I like it or not.
The question is, is there something that
can reasonably replace it.
Between spyware and BHO's changing my
home page on a regular basis I was getting
annoyed with IE.  I did not like Firefox at first
except for the speed of rendering.  For me
there were too many things in IE that I was
used to using to consider switching over.
So I decided to see what could be done
to Firefox to make it more familiar like IE.

Now I can honestly say I have the "feel" of
Internet Explorer without all of the
intrusive problems.  I haven't run a spyware
checker for a while now, and my home page
never changes.

Thanks for visiting firefoxIE.net!

Dan: You have to download Firefox for Mac and then add everything else

Hal Hockersmith: List of things not included: - Changed icon (Still that red fox and globe) - title bar (Mozilla Firefox != Microsoft Internet Explorer) - About Icon (Firefox again) - - Recommendations. - IE icon pack (icons.mozdev.org) - Firesomething(titlebar and about image) - - Just some food for thought.

Anonym: How about moving the Navigation bar?
(14.11.2004, 14:56)

Peter da Silva: Does this do anything to deal with sites that depend on bugs in IE, or is it just a matter of cosmetics?
(12.12.2004, 18:39)

Dan: It actually adds functionality similar to IE!
